The Top 6 ways to prepare for your boudoir photoshoot

Updated: Jul 2

You’ve taken the leap and scheduled your boudoir session; YAS GIRL! Now what?

Preparing for your session can help you feel more comfortable and get the max enjoyment out of your session and the time you have with your photographer. Plus, the more at ease you feel, the better your images will be.

1) Make sure to bring a variety of pieces - more is always better than less. Guiding principles are pieces that you are comfortable & confident in, that reflect your personal style. Suggestions:

  • a piece that is soft/romantic/lace/lighter color

  • a piece that is black/dark color/strappy/risqué

  • a piece in a color that ‘pops’ brighter/bolder (red, orange, turquoise, pink) - make sure this is in line with your skin tone and colors that naturally look good on you.

  • a piece that is ‘fashion focused’ and is a representation of your style - whatever those phrases mean to you. For example a black body suit, a white tank top, a black fedora hat, a gold sparkly mini dress, a flouncy tulle skirt, your partner's button down white work shirt, a sports jersey, a robe, a flannel shirt, an oversized cozy sweater. One item that is not lingerie, that represents you or your relationship to a ‘t’, something you love and would like to have some photographs in. If there is nothing that comes to mind after reading that description, no worries! Bringing a 4th piece of lingerie is also a great option!

Having a variety of different types of lingerie (girly/lacey vs bold/sexy/risqué) allows for different moods within your photo set.

2) Don't forget to moisturize and hydrate - the night before and the morning of make sure you get plenty of water and use a high quality moisturizer. The way the light catches well hydrated skin is not to be underestimated - think dewy soft glowing skin and you're halfway to appreciating the major impact this has on your images! Don't forget the neck, knees and elbows, that's where you can get the most dry looking.

3) Skip the fake tan - Fake tanner tends to look orange in photos and if you’re applying it yourself it can look very streaky in photos. Even the most powerful of photoshop tools cannot remove tan lines, so please tan evenly or be ready to embrace those tan lines in your final images.

4) Paint your Nails & Toes - Freshly painted nail polish always look nicer in photos. Think neutral/natural colors you would like 20 years from now, that will stand the test of time and changing fashion trends. Not really a nail polish person? A clear coat still makes your nails look fresh.

5) Avoid wearing tight clothing before your session - Skip the spandex, skinny jeans, leggings, socks, cami/tank top, tight sports bras. The lines can and will show up in photos. The day of your session come in loose t-shirt or sweatshirts, baggy sweatpants, a flowy dress, and throw on some sandals.

6) Get hair & makeup done professionally - Ladies this is THEE single most important thing you can do to ensure those images turn out GORGEOUS. I get it - the extra time, effort and money required when you can simply do it at home, seems.... EXTRA. But this gives you that extra polished/professional look, while still very much looking like YOU.
